British director Terry Gilliam's fantasy The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which he finished filming in Vancouver with actors Colin Farrell, Johnny Depp and Jude Law last year after star Heath Ledger died, heads the list of B.C.-made movies screening at this year's Toronto International Film Festival.
Ledger filmed his scenes in London, but died of a drug overdose in New York in January 2008 before filming could resume in Vancouver. Gilliam and Vancouver producer Bill Vince resumed filming that February, with the three other stars playing alternate versions of Ledger's character. The movie is about a travelling magician (Christopher Plummer) who tries to escape a deal with the devil (Tom Waits).
Vancouver producer Vince was himself struggling with cancer during filming and died that June. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus premiered at Cannes last May and is set for a gala screening at the Toronto festival.
Toronto announced its Canadian films yesterday. Other B.C.-made films screening at this year's TIFF:
Year of the Carnivore is writer-director Sook-Yin Lee's feature debut, a comic drama about a grocery store worker (Cristin Milioti) who decides she needs more sexual experience to land the guy of her dreams. Will Sasso co-stars as the thuggish store manager and Vancouver's Ali Liebert plays a co-worker.
A Gun to the Head sees New Pornographers keyboardist and filmmaker Blaine Thurier (Low Self Esteem Girl, Male Fantasy) getting a slightly bigger budget for his third movie, a crime story about an ex-gangster (Tygh Runyan) drawn back into the life. The movie also stars Hrothgar Mathews, Ben Cotton and the busy Liebert.
Cole is a small-town drama filmed in Lytton in the summer of 2008 by director Carl Bessai. Richard de Klerk stars as an aspiring writer who returns to the family gas station with a new girlfriend (Battlestar Galactica's Kandyse McClure) in tow. Also starring are Rebecca Jenkins, Sonja Bennett, Michael Eisner and Chad Willett. It's written by Adam Zang, a Seattle-based graduate of the Vancouver Film School.
Excited is the latest from writer-director Bruce Sweeney. It stars Cam Cronin as a guy suffering from premature ejaculation. The boundary-pushing comedy also stars Gabrielle Rose, Kevin McNulty, Laara Sadiq, Agam Darshi and Nicholas Lea.
A Shine of Rainbows is a family-themed drama filmed in Ireland by Vancouver-based director Vic Sarin. It stars Connie Nielsen as a woman who befriends a troubled orphan boy (newcomer John Bell).
Previously announced offerings at the festival, essentially the North American launch for Hollywood's fall season, include the Vancouver-filmed American horror comedy Jennifer's Body, starring Megan Fox and written by Juno Oscar-winner Diablo Cody. The festival runs from Sept. 10 to 19.
