Theater Converts To cheap seats?

The Triangle is getting a new choice for cheap movies.
Garner Towne Square 10 on Friday will stop showing the latest blockbusters and start screening second-run movies for $2.
There are only a handful of second-run movie theaters in this region, including Carmike Cinemas Blue Ridge 14 and the Raleighwood in Raleigh, and the Howell Theater in Smithfield.
The switch in Garner is partly a response to the recession. The 10-screen theater's business has suffered as competition increased and customers cut back on entertainment, general manager Robert Hughes said.
This summer has seen some hits, including "Transformers" and "Harry Potter" sequels. But national attendance for the summer season, which starts May 1, is down 4.4 percent from last year, reports Hollywood.com.
A new owner, Carolina Cinemas, took over in May and decided to try reduced prices to attract moviegoers.
Garner is a blue-collar kind of community, where every penny matters even more," said Hope Branch, district manager for Carolina Cinemas in Charlotte. "If you get enough people through the door, that's a lot of $2 tickets."
The Garner theater changed hands after antitrust regulators ruled last year that another, larger merger would have hurt competition for first-run movies in the area.
Regal Cinemas agreed to buy Consolidated Theatres for $210 million in January 2008. But in April 2008, the U.S. Department of Justice filed an antitrust complaint charging that the combined Regal-Consolidated would control too much of the market for first-run movies in several markets in North Carolina.
In Garner, Regal owned Garner Towne Square 10 and Consolidated owned White Oak 14, about 5 miles away.
The complaint alleged that if one company owned both Garner movie theaters, it would control all of that movie market, worth about $3.5 million in 2007 box office revenue. And the union could lead to higher ticket prices in that market and reduce the new company's incentive to maintain and upgrade its theaters.
Under a settlement with the Justice Department, Regal and Consolidated agreed to sell the Garner Towne theater, as well as the Raleigh Grande 16 and two theaters in Charlotte and Asheville.
Carolina Cinemas bought all four.
The independent chain has no plans to convert the Raleigh Grande to a second-run theater, Branch said.
It holds its own in that market," she said.
But the Garner theater's business has declined since White Oak opened, Hughes said. The newer theater has stadium seating, which audiences prefer.
The business of second-run theaters has evolved, making it more attractive for theater owners, Branch said. For example, it can take as little as a month for a new release to shift to second-run status.
Business has been brisk this summer at the Howell Theater in Smithfield, said Mickey Buffaloe, who has owned the Howell since 1999. Buffaloe recently raised ticket prices to $2.50 to offset higher costs, including the increased minimum wage.
He expects a new second-run theater will increase competition for his theater and for this region's biggest second-run theater, the Blue Ridge 14 in Raleigh. But he also pointed out that more people are seeking bargains in a down economy and shunning full-price movies.
First-run theaters charge $7.50 or more for an adult evening ticket. Matinees, children and seniors are a bit cheaper. Throw in popcorn or candy and a night out can top $50 for a family of four.
I hear from a lot of families that they can't afford to go to movies and pay full price anymore," Buffaloe said. "They're willing to wait and pay a little bit less."
On Friday, the lineup at Garner Towne Square on Timber Drive will include some of the biggest hits from this summer: "Star Trek," "X-Men: Wolverine," "Angels and Demons" and "Drag Me to Hell."
In the end, the $2 tickets should draw crowds, Branch said. As with the traditional movie-theater business, popcorn and other concessions will generate most of the profit.
Making the change was prompted by competition and the economic downturn, but it "is not a lay-down-and-give-up strategy," she added. "It was the best thing for us to do competitively.

With such two huge names involved in the same sentence, it’s no wonder rumor has it Schwarzenegger is looking to invest good money in the campaign, the aforementioned publication says. However, it will not be taxpayers’ money gone down the drain since, if there’s anything that needs to be sold, there is no better person to do it than the British “golden boy” David Beckham, the
David Beckham is to star alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in TV ads promoting California to tourists. Becks, 34, will be filmed playing football on a Los Angeles beach for the commercials also featuring state governor Arnie and Hollywood actor Rob Lowe. The LA Galaxy player was said to be ‘honored’ to take part in the ads alongside Arnie, 62 – famous for his ‘I’ll be back’ phrase in the ‘Terminator’ movies.” The Sun writes, citing sources close enough to Schwarzenegger to know his plans for encouraging tourism in California.
As of now, no other details on the upcoming campaign have yet transpired in the media, although unnamed and reportedly reliable sources vouch that it will be the biggest advertising move tourism has ever seen. A date for starting to shoot for the TV commercial or an estimated release timeframe are also aspects that need some clarification, since the source of the British tabloid can offer none.
It will be a massive campaign. It shows the Governor believes David is a big catch in getting tourists to visit.” the source explains for The Sun. As a matter of fact, Schwarzenegger is convinced the campaign will be a smashing hit despite Beckham’s latest troublesome runs, what with being booed by fans on the field and getting into almost physical confrontations with supporters. “David has had some stick recently, but is doing what he does best – playing good football and scoring goals.” the source adds.

Julia's Story Is Delicious, And so Is her onion soup

The movie "Julie and Julia" opens this weekend, and I'm happy to say that it's one my whole family wants to see. Not even the latest Harry Potter film created this much buzz around our dinner table.
Of course, it is about food, which helps, and blogging, which probably helps more. But honestly, it's the previews of Julia Child herself (as portrayed by Meryl Streep) that my kids keep mentioning.
They especially like it when Julia gives the ol' raspberry to a sleek French cooking school instructor who tells her she has no talent.
The movie has a dual story line: one about how a middle-aged Julia Child becomes an unlikely French food expert, and another about how New Yorker Julie Powell finds purpose in life by making everything in Child's 1961 classic "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" and writing about it on her blog.
From what I've seen, Streep does a magnificent job of portraying not only Child's distinctive voice and mannerisms, but also in capturing Child's enthusiasm for good food that she shared with Americans through her television shows.
I can't help but admire Child, who died in 2004 at age 91, for her willingness to throw herself into a new career at middle age, to forge ahead with what she loved when some people (like that snarky French chef) told her to forget about it.
Plus, the woman really could cook.
But for those who think that fancy French cooking isn't for them, who figure there's nothing in Child's classic cookbooks they'd want to make, I have just three words.
French onion soup.
That rich, cheese-topped favorite, on all sorts of menus, from fancy steak houses to casual family restaurants, is popular for a reason. It's absolutely delicious and -- surprisingly -- quite easy to make.
French onion soup also illustrates just how good simple ingredients can taste when given a little time and attention.
I'd never made Child's onion soup recipe until recently, and I especially liked her comments about the soup, which she did not relegate to special occasions.
Serve it after a football game, at a Sunday-night supper or as a midnight snack," Child wrote in "The French Chef Cookbook" (Ballantine Books, $14). "Its rich aroma, its wonderful flavor and savor, have made French onion soup a world favorite."
It's certainly one of mine.

miranda kerr Denies rumors of marriage ultimatum from Orlando Bloom

When Victoria’s Secret Angel Miranda Kerr met Hollywood superstar Orlando Bloom in late 2007 and then the two started dating, the tabloids somehow knew they would have a field day with wedding rumors on the couple. As a proof, speculation of two tying the knot has not ceased to make the rounds both in tabs and in the blogosphere, with some outlets even claiming Bloom has given the model an ultimatum in this sense. As it happens, that’s not necessarily the truth, Kerr says, as quoted by SawfNews.
The supermodel is currently in Australia, promoting major retailer David Jones, and marriage is the last thing on her mind, she has told reporters in between questions focused on her latest campaign. Talk of Bloom walking out on the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” film just to spend more time with her and of the actor giving her an ultimatum as to her indecision to make a more serious commitment is rubbish, the gorgeous 26-year-old star says.
What a load of baloney – as if anyone would do that.” Kerr said when asked whether there was any truth to the rumor that Bloom had threatened to walk out on her if she did not accept his next marriage proposal. As for Orlando leaving the “Pirates” franchise so that he could be more with her, that too was false, Kerr added. “As if that would ever happen, or as if I would allow that to happen.” the model explained. “I’m not engaged. I want to put a stop to that rumor.” Kerr concluded by saying.
As we also reported a while back, word in the industry has it that Orlando Bloom has officially left the “Pirates” franchise and will not be resuming his part in the fourth installment, just like neither will British actress Keira Knightley. While Knightley made it clear in several interviews that she had gotten the best out of “Pirates” and was looking for different challenges in the future, no one seems to know why Bloom too decided to leave.
This prompted speculation that he may have done so in order to have more time for his personal life, since shooting for “Pirates” would have meant he be away on location for the better part of a year. Since he had plans of marrying and settling down, he chose Miranda Kerr instead, a recent report said.

Britney spears goes back to Peroxide Blonde

As she was slowly climbing the charts and rising in people’s music preferences as the Princess of Pop, Britney Spears’ image was that of a toned, blonde sensation, with blue eyes and moves to die for. Much has changed in the meantime, what with the singer going through a nervous breakdown and basically losing control over all aspects of her life, but, inch by inch, the older Spears is beginning to reemerge.
And the first step she’s taking in that direction is dying her hair back to peroxide blonde, as Splash News can confirm. Britney spent no less than nine hours at a beauty salon in West Hollywood, where she had her dark brown locks dyed in bright blonde, much in the manner Lindsay Lohan also has just a few days ago. Supposedly, Britney also got new extensions to go along with the fresh hair-dye, which could be one of the reasons she looked so down when she headed out, gossip mags are pointing out.
Britney’s hair has been through a lot in recent months, and we’re not necessarily talking here about the by-now infamous head-shaving moment when she buzzed all her hair in front of the paparazzi, supposedly in a moment of drunken rage. As fans must remember, Britney is a fan of do-it-yourself dye jobs, which means she has donned more colors than any other celebrity out there. What with going from black or dark brown to blonde – which, as all girls must know, is one of the most complicated and damaging beauty treatments – and having extensions put, questions about whether she still has at least some natural hair have again started popping up.
Either way, most fans see Britney’s latest change as a sign that things are heading towards normalcy again. Speculation has it that she’s about to regain full control over her finances and be again allowed to make her own decisions as regards personal life and business choices, as she’s been spotted driving her own car recently and, now that she’s blonde again, it seems pretty clear her comeback is, indeed, the real deal.
Splash News joins the millions of Britney Spears fans and the countless US and international publications in welcoming back the Princess of Pop, now back to her former, blonde self. Spears is currently back home in Los Angeles, where she was spotted out clubbing and introducing her new ‘do. She will be resuming her Circus tour later this month.

Monica Keena, Bad Plastic Surgery

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Monica Keena stepped out on Saturday at Adult Swim's "Robot Chicken: Skate Party," but perhaps the former "Dawson's Creek" star may have been better off skipping the event.
Keena has suddenly become the subject of a plastic surgery gone wrong after appearing at the event held at Skateland in Northridge, Calif. Following her appearance, the New York Post wrote: "Oh Monica Keena, why oh why did you take the number of Brittany Murphy's plastic surgeon? You were so cute on 'Dawson's Creek,' so funny on 'Undeclared' and so impaled on 'Grey's Anatomy.' "
Keena appeared as Abby Morgan in a recurring part on "Dawson's Creek" before landing a starring role on "Undeclared," the Judd Apatow-series that lasted for one season in 2001.
The now 30-year-old actress recently wrapped shooting on "Night of the Demons," a remake of the 1988 horror film of the same name.
