Latest Hollywood Scandal

The latest Hollywood scandal was not perpetrated by Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie or Britney Spears. Mel Gibson, Michael Richards and Isaiah Washington had nothing to do with it.
In fact, it wasn’t a celebrity at all. It was a magazine. Entertainment Weekly, to be precise.
Now, I admire the magazine as much as the next follower of the cult of celebrity. I read it. I count on it. I believe it.
But, in its August 31 edition, I think Entertainment Weekly may have stretched its credibility a bit.
True, this is the slowest entertainment news week of the year. Movie numbers are low, television numbers are low and CD sales are low.
So, it is understandable that a magazine might lean on a gimmick cover story this week, and Entertainment Weekly responded with “THE SUMMER OF SCANDAL!”
Not a bad idea, as gimmick cover stories go, but I would like to know who voted on the list of THE 25 BIGGEST SCANDALS OF THE PAST 25 YEARS?”
Was Sinead tearing up a photo of the pope really the third biggest scandal of the last 25 years? Was Gibson’s meltdown really worth a number 2 rating? And does Janet Jackson’s exposed breast during the Super Bowl warrant the top spot? Weren’t there other more serious scandals during the last 25 years? Didn’t a few people actually get killed during that time?
The magazine’s choices expose how trivial celebrity news has gotten. I wonder what numbers 26 through 30 would have been if Entertainment Weekly chose to expand its list? I could venture a guess.
26. Paris Hilton breaks a nail on a Sunday and can’t get help until Monday morning!
27. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie walk down a street and are not photographed!
28. Britney Spears does nothing bizarre for an entire week!
29. Lindsay Lohan drives sober!
30. Young Hollywood sneezes and nobody cares!
